Colts Neck High: Best in Navy Junior ROTC

Colts Neck High School has long been one of the best schools in the Freehold Regional School District. It has great academic programs and a whole roster of sports and extracurricular activities, all of which contribute to create a vibrant and exciting student life.

But the one thing that Colts Neck High School really excels at is the Navy Junior ROTC program. They’re so good that just last year, Colts Neck High School’s Navy Junior ROTC Unit was recognized as the “Most Outstanding Unit” in the country. And that wasn’t their first time to receive such a recognition. It’s actually their third time! To add to that, the NJROTC Unit at Colts Neck High School is ranked second in the world.

So if you have a kid who would love to join the four-year training academy, here is everything you should know.

What is the Navy Junior ROTC (NJROTC) Academy all about?

The NJROTC Academy is an intensive four-year academy organized by the Freehold Regional School District. It’s located at Colts Neck High School.

It’s not all about drills at the NJROTC Academy. It takes a holistic approach, teaching their cadets about leadership and character development through four areas of study: academics, physical fitness, leadership, and of course, military skills.

  • Academics: For this part of the training, cadets will learn all about U.S. history and security, the U.S. Navy, and naval sciences, which has three levels. If they need any help, cadets can ask for help from older cadets in what they call “peer tutoring.” Cadets also have free access to resources that will help them ace standardized tests such as SAT, PSAT, and ACT.
  • Physical fitness: Cadets need to be in peak form. To help them get there, they’ll need to attend physical training sessions everyday. These are conducted by licensed NJROTC instructors.
  • Leadership: To move up the ranks once they join the U.S. Navy, cadets need to have superior leadership skills. They’ll get to hone and improve this skill, as well pick up self-discipline and teamwork, through conducted by licensed NJROTC instructors.
  • Leadership: To move up the ranks once they join the U.S. Navy, cadets need to have superior leadership skills. They’ll get to hone and improve this skill, as well pick up self-discipline and teamwork, through community service, drills, and extracurricular activities.
  • Military skills: To prepare them for their eventual career, the NJROTC Academy will provide the relevant military skills training to the cadets. This involves knowledge and understanding of drills, ceremonies, as well as military customs and courtesies.

Other Opportunities

It’s not all work for cadets at the NJROTC Academy. They’ll also get to travel, give back to the community through social events, and participate in a wide array of extracurricular activities. Everything they do at the NJROTC Academy will have a lasting impact on their lives.
