Fox Hunting: A Monmouth County Tradition

Fox-hunting

In Monmouth County, a centuries-old tradition remains a highly anticipated event. It’s the annual fox hunt hosted by the Monmouth County Hunt. During this special time of the year, you’ll get to see groups of men and women dressed handsomely in formal foxhunting attire. They’ll be running across the fields and forests of the Assunpink Wildlife Management Area on their horses with hounds in tow.

But what is the fox hunt? Is it really a hunt? Learn more about this old sport and how it came to Monmouth County below.

It’s all because of an Irishman

Monmouth County’s fox hunting tradition began when Peter F. Collier joined the immigrants and settled in the United States. He built a kennel and stable in 1885 and named it Rest Hill. An avid hunter, he kept hounds and constantly traveled back to Ireland for the hunting season.

When he died, his son, Robert, inherited Rest Hill. Although he didn’t share his father’s interest in hunting, Robert kept his late father’s hounds and horses. The practice of hunting continued after he passed away. A Club was established and, to this day, it remains active as the Monmouth County Hunt.

It’s all about the Chase

Although New Jersey actually permits fox hunting with guidelines in place, that activity has nothing to do with Monmouth County’s fox hunt. In this sport, no foxes are farmed. They’re only chased. Monmouth County’s fox hunt has also become an avenue for riding enthusiasts to showcase their skills, and for hounds to display their natural talents.

In order to join the fox hunt, you should be a member of the Club itself: Monmouth County Hunt. And even though they look dapper and intimidating in their coats and jackets, new members are always welcome to join. Once you’re a part of the club, you get to ride with the rest of the members twice a week during the fox hunting season, which runs from August to March.

If you’re not sure if you want to join but would like to experience everything, find a member and ask if they can bring you along as a guest.

How the Fox Hunt Works

During the fox hunt season, members of Monmouth County Hunt ride out to Assunpink Wildlife Management Area every Wednesday and Sunday. They’re required to come out in the formal fox hunting attire. That’s harrier green jackets for men and blue or black coats for women. They should also wear the appropriate buttons on their jackets.

The Field Master leads the entire group, with the hounds smelling the earth to pick up a scent of a fox or two. With all the staff working, the group is directed to the right trail.

Can you watch?

Yes, you can! There’s a designated area for spectators, but that’s as far as you’re allowed to go. It’s also important to stay quiet so the staff can hear the hounds and go where they’re supposed to go.
