A brief history of Manalapan
Manalapan was incorporated in 1848 from parts of Freehold Township. It surrounds Englishtown, which used to be part of the town of Manalapan before it was formed into a borough in 1888.
The name “Manalapan” was coined from two Lenape Indian words – “manel”, which means drinking; and “paune”, meaning bread. Taken together, Manalapan roughly means “good land to settle upon”, a phrase that closely mirrors the town’s present day motto of “A great place to live.”
Manalapan was the site of the 1778 Battle of Monmouth during the Revolutionary War – a major engagement between the Continental Army led by George Washington and the British Army. Every year, on or around June 28th, locals stage a reenactment of the battle at the Monmouth Battlefield State Park, which was established to commemorate the historic event.
