It’s safe to say that once you set your foot on Freehold Township, NJ, there’s a good chance that you’ll fit right in. This lively community of just a little over 36,100 residents is one of the friendliest and most welcoming around.
The township lies in Central New Jersey – New York is approximately 50 miles northeast, while the Jersey Shore and New Jersey’s famous beaches are simply 17 miles east. In other words, it’s a short drive or commute to key destinations.
Freehold’s bustling downtown area features a wonderful mix of cafes, restaurants, farmer’s markets, and period or historic homes. Other attractions include the famous Freehold Raceway, and also the Freehold Raceway Mall, widely considered as one of the New Jersey’s best shopping centers.
A rich history
Lenni Lenape Indians inhabited the area of the township before Dutch settlers arrived in the early 1600s, followed by the English soon after.
In 1708, Freehold became the county seat of Monmouth County and an early center of commercial and agricultural activity. The Borough of Freehold was established in 1919, formally separating from the Township and becoming its own attraction.
Today, the Freehold Township Preservation Commission protects and restores historic sites to make sure they remain intact long into the future.
An ideal place to live
In Freehold, residents boast higher incomes than the national average.
It’s also easy to commute to and from key business destinations like New York. NJ Transit leaves Freehold at 7:53 a.m. and every 20 minutes thereafter towards the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.
The town offers an array of leisure activities:
- For indoor fun, look to entertainment centers featuring arcade games, rides, and laser tag, among other exciting activities
- For those who prefer the outdoors, take to the trails or hit the water at the various parks that make up the Monmouth County Park System
- For a glimpse of wildlife, Turkey Swamp Park’s lakeside campground is a great place to spot white-tailed deer, forest-nesting birds, larger birds like horned owls, and water birds like herons and kingfisher
- For fishing opportunities, head to Lake Topanemus and reel in popular species such as largemouth bass and rainbow trout
Freehold Township Schools serve pre-K to eighth grade. Those in high school may attend Freehold Township High School or Freehold High School, which are part of the Freehold Regional High School District for specialized or elevated educational opportunities.
Freehold also boasts excellent vocational schools that teach courses on biotechnology, communications, science, and technology, and allied health. In addition, the township houses two boarding schools for boys—the Freehold Military School and the New Jersey Military Academy.
Excellent healthcare and career opportunities
Freehold is the seat of the CentraState Medical Center, a not-for-profit community health provider that offers comprehensive health services and facilities including an acute-care hospital, ambulatory care campus, and three elderly living communities.
There are also career opportunities in CentraState, Monmouth County’s third largest employer.
